How to Replace an audi key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, Audi key replacement Cost uk i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find, especially when you're looking at an Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues with your car.
