Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade item type it could boost an item level upgrade's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests Each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of its upgraded benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades to items can be costly depending on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is because of how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a widely used measurement of power and is visible on all tooltips for items. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a sign of the item's condition and quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller is possible using the item's level.

On PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item upgrade and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories about how the level of an item is calculated. One theory suggests that the level of an Best item upgrade is calculated using formulas that determine the worth of an item's stats really are. It considers the fact that different perks have different worth and that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzard's real Best item upgrade level.

However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stat modifications of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. A grey or white item for instance, can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

Another method of altering the stats of an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give items extra damage or special abilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to differentiate them by adding a name.

Currently, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circles arrows. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can also choose which stats they want to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item that is unique, or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to enhance. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves and is thus more useful in early game runs than in later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can spawn or be crafted using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%.

The performance of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
